The MIOCARDIA project focuses on the study of the connectivity of heart fibres, in order to corroborate the myocardial ventricular band theory of Torrent-Guasp. This theory proposes that the heart’s muscle structure is formed by a single fibre band twisted on itself to create the anatomy of both ventricles. In this project, images obtained by post-mortem canine and human diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) are analysed to recover fibre structure, and in-vivo Tagged MRI images are obtained to obtain heart movement patterns. This information allows to perform finite element simulations including electrical propagation and electro-mechanical coupling in the heart.
